HERBSMITH RX VALERIAN ROOT POWDER FOR HORSES

Valerian root is a calming herb that grows in northern Europe, Asia, and North America.

It has been used in traditional herbal medicine for over 2,000 years and is an ingredient in many human supplements for stress and sleep disorders, particularly insomnia.

Valerian interacts with gamma amino-butyric acid (GABA), a chemical messenger that helps regulate nerve impulses in the brain.

Studies have shown that acute or chronic stress in humans can lead to low GABA levels in the brain.

Valerenic acid from valerian root might help reduce GABA breakdown, resulting in feelings of calmness.

In addition, the neurologic compounds valerian stimulates also act on the areas of the brain that process fear and intense emotional responses to stress.

VALERIAN ROOT BENEFITS:

  • Powerful, effective antispasmodic
  • Has a quieting, calming, healing effect on the nervous system
  • Marvelous weapon against stress and nervousness
  • Has no narcotic effects
  • Soothes muscular discomfort
  • Aids in normalizing heart palpitations
  • Slows the action of the heart while strengthening it
  • Excellent support for the circulatory system
  • Stimulates secretion and peristaltic action of stomach and intestines
  • Anti-flatulent (gas)

CAUTIONS

Most competitive organizations and associations consider valerian a banned substance.

Valerian also has some potential side effects. It should not be given to horses with kidney problems, and it can also interact with other medications.

Always consult your horse's veterinarian before administering valerian, especially to horses receiving other medications.
