Hyaluronic Acid is a type of Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) which is an essential component of all connective tissues and synovial fluid found in the joints. Synovial fluid provides lubrication in the joint and thus a "cushion", so that when the joint moves, cartilage is not grinding against itself within the joint. A joint without synovial fluid is like ball bearings without grease - the friction caused will tear it apart, bit by bit.

When horses have joint damage, or suffer from degenerative conditions, the amount of Hyaluronic Acid in the joints decreases and causes the joint fluid to become thinner and less effective. This lack of proper lubrication and cushion can cause cartilage to break down. Joints with any range of damage, from severe to minor, can quickly deteriorate without enough synovial fluid. On the other hand, sufficient Hyaluronic Acid can help facilitate proper joint maintenance by producing synovial fluid that is typically lacking in unhealthy joints.
